| Recycling Operations |
| | Our team of thirty full time equivalent staff (twenty-two full-time and eight part-time) are all employed on permanent contracts of employment. |
| | They collect recyclable materials from approximately 5,000 households and 1000 buisinesses in Brighton & Hove. |
| | The materials are sorted on the back of our purpose built collection vehicles, bulked and stored before being distributed to merchants specialising in reprocessing the various materials. |
Consultation Service |
| | We are currently providing a kerbside advice consultation service for several local authorities in the south-east, including |
| | Adur District Council, "Magpie Recycling Co-operative are working in partnership with Adur Council, collecting the green waste and taking it for composting." |
| | Horsham District Council, "in partnership with the University of Brighton and Magpie Recycling, are conducting trials of recycling systems with the aim of increasing the recycling rate. |
| | The trials are designed to make people think about recycling. The containers are being delivered by Magpie Recycling who have over 10 years experience in recycling. |
| | They will call on each household, hand over an information pack and briefly explain the system. This is a novel approach which aims to stimulate the public". |
| | and Croydon District Council, where we are helping to increase the number of households using their kerbside scheme by visiting 16000 households with leaflets and questionaires. |
Manufacturing Workshop |
| | We aim to be environmentally aware in all our operations. Consequently our collection vehicles are electric powered converted milk floats. |
| | We have designed and converted these ourselves in our manufacturing workshop. |
| | The workshop staff includes a contract manager and one full time and one part time craftsperson. |
| | In the long term it is our intention to design and build electric collection vehicles suitable for sale to other kerbside schemes across the UK. |
Commercial Services |
| | We currently have over 1,050 commercial customers. Our services include confidential shredding, collection of a variety of grades of office paper, aluminium cans, plastics, tetras, foil, cardboard and toners. |
| | We employ the equivalent of 3 full time staff plus a manager, using electric vehicles for in and around Brighton & Hove and petrol vans for the further afield collections. |
| | These vehicles are also available for a variety of removal services. All materials are sorted and bulked as explained above. |
Furniture Project |
| | Employing one manager and three full time employees, we collect donated furniture free of charge and sell it on at cost to those on low income. |
| | Many of these customers will have been referred to us by Social Services, therefore facilitating close working partnerships with various organisations in the field. |
| | We also work in conjunction with Social Services to offer a low cost removals and storage facility. Which is now available to all residents of Brighton and Hove. |
Administration/Accounting Team |
| | Employing two managers and two full time employees. |
| | This team is responsible for accounting, customer database management, personnel, IT support and editing various publications including our quarterly newsletter. |
Development Team |
| | This is shared amongst all employees. |
| | Their initial remit is to look at the medium and long term shape of the business, investigate the various avenues for development within the waste industry, and apply for funding and sponsorship. |
