Biodiesel is a substitute for 'fossil' diesel and is made from vegetable oil.
Check out the government's latest report on biodiesel
It has many advantages over conventional diesel.
| | Emmisions are substantially reduced - biodiesel is virtually carbon neutral as the plant that produces the oil in the first place 'breathes in' as much carbon dioxide as the fuel releases when it is burnt. |
| | Biodiesel smoke doesn't contain any of the heavy metals or other crude-oil derived pollutants associated with conventional diesel. |
| | It is less toxic than table salt, and is completely biodegradeable |
| | The oil used for biodiesel can be grown in the UK, or made from used vegetable oil from restaurants and other catering companies. |
| | Biodiesel can be poured straight into your tank, mixed in any proportion with fossil diesel. |
| | Biodiesel has been a popular choice throughout South America, Europe and the USA for a number of years, and is starting to become more common in the UK. |
| There are two main considerations when using biodiesel in your vehicle. |
| | Biodiesel is a solvent. It will dissolve some types of rubber, used in fuel lines/seals on certain vehicles. |
| | Vehicles with rubber parts that will be affected tend to be older. |
| | For more information, contact your manufacturer.
| | Biodiesel will also dislodge any residual crud in the tank or lines. |
| | Whilst it's a good idea to have a clean fuel system, this crud will initially be forced towards the fuel filter, causing it to block. |
| | When converting your vehicle over to biodiesel, it's recommended to 'break it in gently' with a small proportion of bio, and to replace the fuel filter after a couple of weeks. |
| | Biodiesel is also less effective in very cold weather - most users just use a mix of bio and fossil to see them through extremely cold spells. |
