The North Laine area has characteristics that make the implementation of a recycling scheme slightly challenging. The lack of storage space in many properties hinders the possibilities for separating and storing materials. Council regulations on placing waste outside properties also adds difficulties in terms of collections. Businesses having to deal with a number of different waste contracts may also lead to confusion and spiralling costs in order to cover Duty of Care requirements.
However, Magpie Recycling has provided a recycling service (for all materials) in the North Laines for over ten years. All we ask is that materials are separated and placed into different bags. The individual needs of customers have always been taken into account and problems with collections have been overcome by remaining flexible and dedicated to keeping as many materials out of landfill as possible.
Therefore, here at Magpie we feel that a suitable strategy would involve collecting small amounts of materials on a regular basis (see attached overview). A good starting point could be a trial period of collections on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for one month. Extremely durable bags (similar dimensions to a bin bag) would be provided for materials to be sorted into. To combat issues of street containerisation, bags could be left inside and our collectors could remove them from premises where no private outside space is available. Establishing a time most suitable for the majority of customers would arise from the trial period, aiming to cause the least disruption to customer’s space and daily business.
In order to cover the costs of the scheme a certain amount of customers would be needed. The proposal works on the concept of every shop down a street having one or two bags on each collection day. However, in order to encourage participation, group discounts would be possible (10% off for maybe every 50 customers to sign up) to keep the costs per bag down for everyone. Here at Magpie, Duty of Care costs are always kept to the bare minimum. There are also no contractual agreements so a quiet week in terms of producing waste means a smaller bill. You only pay for what you produce, not a weekly charge regardless of the amount of waste you have.
The pollution (both airborne and noise related) of using diesel vehicles for collections is also an issue for us at Magpie. We are currently customising another electric vehicle to add to our fleet. It’s size would make it ideal for use in the North Laines, also making a welcome change from the noisy, big and diesel hungry vehicles already filling the streets.
This proposal aims to provide a simple, reliable, cost effective and environmentally aware collection service for all recyclable materials from the North Laine area. At Magpie we are always open to questions and ideas, so please do not hesitate to contact our office on 01273 685628 if you would like to discuss this proposal or any related issues.
