Special  Slick Schools Scheme

Slick Schools Scheme
We have just launched the ‘Slick Schools’ scheme......
You can download the flyer here (pdf format)
The ‘Slick Schools’ scheme which has been developed specifically to assist Eco-Schools in achieving further awards whilst improving their local environment. The scheme focuses on the fulfilment of the ‘Community’ aspect of the Eco-Schools ethos of introducing sustainability into curriculum, campus and community, as per the government’s Sustainable Schools agenda. ‘Slick Schools’ is a multi-agency project operated voluntarily by Magpie Recycling, sponsored by Southern Water, supported by the Environment Agency and hosted by local schools and colleges.
‘Slick Schools’ is a free collection service just for registered Eco-Schools in East and West Sussex and has been designed to need only minimal administration from hosts, recognising the limited time and financial resources available to schools. We will provide a complete ‘Host Package’ for oil deposits including a lockable bin, containers, funnel, filter, spill kit, signage and instructions. This will be funded by a grant from Eco-Schools. We will also supply a quantity of leaflets for schools to publicise the service to their local communities. These are being printed by our sponsors Southern Water.
‘Slick Schools’ will be trialed at Hertford Infant & Nursery School and Dorothy Stringer School, both in Brighton, from Easter 2007 and launched in our Phase One Area (within approx. 15 miles of Brighton) from September 2007. The scheme will be run with some exciting eco-prizes as incentives for the schools that collect the most oil - you could help win your local school a wind turbine or solar panel! The scheme is very educational for pupils as ‘Slick Schools’ covers the topics of Water, Pollution, Landfill, Waste Minimisation, Energy, Renewable Energy and Bio fuels. A particularly attractive feature of these topics is that it all starts with something that kids love – chips!
Help your local school to win a solar panel or wind generator
Fantastic eco-prizes for the schools that collect the most oil. Waste cooking oil blocks drains, contaminates the environment and damages local wildlife eco-systems. Save your used cooking oil from deep or shallow frying and simply drop it off at your local eco-school and we will transform it into environmentally-friendly bio-diesel.
What sort of oil can I donate?
All waste vegetable oils including maize, olive, palm, rapeseed, soya, sunflower, safflower, sesame, almond, coconut, groundnut/peanut and walnut. Do not worry about small particles of chips or other food matter in the oil ~ this will be sieved out.
What sort of oil can’t I donate?
Please do not donate cooking oil contaminated with water or large quantities of animal fat ~ it is not possible to turn this into bio-diesel. Strictly no engine oil, mineral oil, bath oil or cosmetic oil thank you.
 Where’s my local eco-school?
A large proportion of schools are now registered as eco-schools ~ many have expressed an interest in participating in the Slick Schools scheme. Hertford Infant and Nursery School (01273 552931) and Dorothy Stringer School (01273 852222) will be participating from Easter 2007 and are kindly acting as our trial schools. In addition the following five schools will take part from September 2007: Balfour Junior School (01273 553521), Benfield Junior School (01273 294950), Patcham High School (01273 503908), Lewes New School (01273 477074) and Somerhill Junior School (01273 739659).
When can I take the oil there?
Most schools will open their SLICK BIN for one day per half term ~ or about six times per year. Call them to find out dates for their SLICK BIN open days.
How should I bring the oil?
Please save your cooled oil in a screw top plastic bottle no larger than 2 litres. No glass bottles or flip top lids thank you.
 Is this legal?
Waste cooking oil is classed as hazardous waste and as such may not be stored by anyone without a licence. However we have liaised with the Environment Agency and due to the benefits to the environment they will grant an exemption to any participating school.
Can they put in the waste cooking oil from the school kitchens?
This is commercial waste and can be collected for free under a separate scheme ‘Slick Schools Commercial’. There are also prizes for the schools which collect the most oil via this route.
What about local restaurants and takeaways – can schools have their oil too?
Ask your local eateries if you can ‘adopt’ them. Magpie will collect their oil for free and credit your school with their oil under the ‘Slick Schools Commercial’ scheme. It’s a win-win-win situation!
Will Magpie come to any school and do an assembly on waste oil or other recycling topics?
Due to an extreme lack of resources unfortunately we are unable to do free assemblies. We currently charge £10 for an assembly or alternatively we will accept full or part payment in clean tin foil (£1 per sack) or drinks cans (£0.50 per sack). Start collecting now!
